Inspired Read: Law for Dummies

Hey y’all! The last time I posted, I graduated from UTSA and was preparing to start law school. I am not going to lie to y’all, this semester beat me up, I had to buckle down for a minute there. However, now that it is over I can share about all that I have learned about myself and the new connections I have made. Here is a general summary of my semester!

First and foremost, I have made so many new friends! This was one of my biggest stressors before starting school. I moved back home and did not have any friends who were starting law school with me. However, I have met the coolest group of girls since the first week of classes and since then we have become good friends. Law school is such a high-intensity environment and having these friends made the experience so much easier. It is always a good reminder that I am not doing this by myself! I joined a new church and a young adult community as well. Finding this new Christian community has also made the transition so smooth and seamless. It provided me with some space to make sure I am living a life outside of law school and still interacting with people my age.

Entering into the first semester, I had a lot of personal hobbies that I enjoyed in my free time. As the semester continued, I no longer had free time and many of my hobbies were repurposed. I love reading and writing but I have had to focus that energy on my daily reading assignments and the long writing assignments. I had to take a break from the blog and social media because I could not find the time to focus. However, I use those same skills to network with peers and employers.

While I have lost a lot of my hobbies I have been able to find new things to relax and unwind. A big thing for me this semester has been studying outside and going on walks. I constantly needed to remind myself to go outside and touch some grass. I have learned how to utilize my time effectively since I am on such a tight schedule most days. Instead of eating while studying or during a tutoring session, I have tried to repurpose that time to share meals with friends and family. I am always down to meet up for a quick dinner or lunch. Along that same vein, studying with friends has been so refreshing. While most of my friends are not in law school with me, they are in graduate or some other professional school. I can make time to study with them outside the law building.

I am currently participating in the process of finding a firm to join this summer and hopefully receive an offer to work full-time. I applied to a couple of great firms that I share similar values with and believe I would fit into their office culture nicely. I still have a lot to learn about the process and the legal community however this is the moment I worked toward all semester.

Overall, this semester has been great! I did really well on my exams and have very high hopes for next semester.  It was a sudden change of pace and I had to quickly adapt. However, going through that process has been refreshing and refining. I have been in contact with my mentors and plan on learning from their experiences and expertise. I am thankful to God for keeping me through this semester and exam season. I am super excited to see how the rest of law school goes!
