Christmas over the years has lost the childlike charm it used to have. As I have grown older it brought some stress over gift-giving and other responsibilities needed to celebrate the holiday. Although, these following traditions have kept the excitement of Christmas in my heart as I age. I hope to carry them on with my future family.
1. Decorating the House and Tree!
Right after Thanksgiving, I push my family to start decorating the house! We all gather downstairs and put up the tree first. We blast Christmas music and string lights on the banisters. Sure, there may be a little arguing over some creative decisions but it is still so much fun to spend this time with them. We all have very busy schedules, yet we all stop to put up lights, bows, and wreaths all over the house. It helps add to the Christmas spirit when everything in your living room and kitchen is Christmas themed.
2. Christmas Caroling Service
My church always holds a caroling service the week of Christmas. This is such a great time where each family comes together and celebrates. We all wear funny Santa hats and sing Christmas hymns/songs together. There is a chance to win cool presents and see the parents sing at the top of their lungs. Not only that but we have a big dinner, so it looks like we are one huge family.
3. Friendship Dinner
Okay, this dinner changes each year but it is always fun regardless. My friends and I come together and celebrate the holidays. We either get super dressed up and go to a nice restaurant or we have a casual dinner with a homecooked meal. Sometimes we do a Secret Santa and try to outdo each other with the gifts we get. I truly love this opportunity to appreciate my friends and celebrate my favorite holiday.
Being older, the spirit of Christmas changes from a time of wonder and magic to a time to appreciate friends and family. It is my favorite holiday and I hope everyone else has the opportunity to celebrate the season with their loved ones.
